Richard M. Nichols, Of Counsel
Richard M. Nichols is an attorney with over thirty (30) years of experience in the business of sports, entertainment, politics, municipal government, commercial real estate, finance, start-ups, venture capital, technology, and communications.
Rich is well known for his ability to identify opportunities, operate companies, acquire financing, consummate transactions and provide real-time advice and business counsel in the technology, sports and entertainment, real estate development, finance, broadcasting, municipal government, and telecommunications industries. Rich has been an operating principal and equity participant in several major start-up companies.
Notably, as an entrepreneur, Rich was a founding executive and General Counsel of the American Basketball League (ABL), the premier professional women’s basketball league and catalyst for the advent of the WNBA; Owner/operator of a successful sports marketing and management company in the 1980’s, and the Owner/operator of the City of San Francisco Marathon. Additionally, he was a Founding member of a successful, San Francisco, CA-based fund-of-funds asset management firm, and served as Chief Executive Officer of a Silicon Valley-based sports content video-streaming company.
Also, Rich was general counsel to a digital technology, social media-based start-up that was eventually acquired by Facebook, and for a couple of decades has ably served as the business and personal counsel to several major metropolitan and statewide elected and appointed officials, professional and collegiate coaches, and several World and Olympic Champion athletes, including Marion Jones, Edwin Moses, and NFL Hall of Fame Wide Receiver James Lofton.
In the public service arena, Rich served as Chief of Staff to the Deputy Mayor of Planning & Economic Development in the District of Columbia. In this capacity in Washington, DC, among myriad duties and responsibilities, Rich assisted in the execution and management of an active multi-billion dollar commercial real estate portfolio in the nation’s capital.

Rich has also been engaged by the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business to provide Strategic Crisis Management & Communications training seminars for executives, coaches and player personnel professionals in the NFL and NCAA.
Notably, Rich has enjoyed a distinguished career as a Senior Counsel with Wilson, Sonsini, Goodrich, & Rosati, P.C in the Silicon Valley, and Hughes & Luce, L.L.P., (now K&L Gates) in Dallas, Texas.
Additionally, Rich has served as an adjunct professor at University of California, Hastings College of Law, teaching Sports Law, and has served on several company boards of directors.
Rich is a graduate of Dartmouth College, earned a Masters of Arts degree from Stanford University, and a Juris Doctorate from the University of California, Hastings College of Law.
Rich is a member of the State Bar of California and the State Bar of Texas.
